Surface cleaning by airbrushing
Air-gumming company in Belgium and Luxembourg
Airbrushing is a stripping, cleaning and finishing technique that uses low-pressure projection of compressed air containing abrasive or non-abrasive particles. These particles are selected according to surface condition or the desired result on the treated surface.
This blasting technique is used in a wide range of sectors, including the food, steel, automotive, construction, aeronautical and marine industries.

Airbrushing: the evolution of sandblasting
Airbrushing and sandblasting are two high-pressure stripping techniques that use aggregates to remove deposits and contamination from hard surfaces. They work by projecting abrasives via compressed air from a pre-filled pressurized tank.
Although similar, they differ in some key respects:
- Type of aggregate used: Airbrushing uses finer abrasives such as sand, glass or microbeads, ideal for avoiding damage to treated surfaces. Sandblasting, on the other hand, uses coarser abrasives such as sea sand or glass sand, recommended for their more energetic stripping capabilities. Sometimes, specific terms such as "shot blaster" are used to describe sandblasting equipment.
- Pressure used: Sandblasting generally operates at a higher pressure, suitable for removing thick layers of material, typically around 7 bar or more. Airbrushing, with variable pressure control from 0.5 to 7 bar, is designed for less aggressive stripping.
- Applications: Airbrushing is preferred for delicate finishes, such as cleaning facades or sculptures, while sandblasting is favored for more intense surface preparations, such as paint stripping.
- Associated risks: Sandblasting is more intensive and can cause significant damage to surfaces and their direct environment. Airbrushing, on the other hand, is renowned for its gentleness and low abrasiveness.
In short, airbrushing enables meticulous treatment of various substrates without damaging them, effectively preparing surfaces for painting or other treatments.

How did XLG calculate its carbon footprint?
Since 2022, XLG has carried out its annual carbon footprint by analyzing all its emissions across the three scopes: Scope 1: our direct emissions (vehicle fleet, fuel consumption, etc.), Scope 2: our electricity and energy consumption, Scope 3: all indirect emissions (purchases, travel, waste, etc.). This comprehensive approach gives us a global view of our environmental impact and enables us to identify concrete avenues for reduction. This data serves as a compass to guide our actions, with a clear objective: to reduce our emissions by at least 3% per year.

Do you have any certifications in line with your commitments?
XLG has been awarded the "Committed" badge by EcoVadis, and our Facility businesses are ISO 14 001 certified. XLG has also developed the XLG Safe & Natural range in partnership with the HTS Bio laboratory in France to meet the specific requirements of our worksites. This range, at the cutting edge of biotechnology, uses probiotics to guarantee prolonged product efficacy.
Stripping with natural abrasives: airbrushing respects health and the environment
The materials used for air-scrubbing can be garnet, glass beads, walnut shells or baking soda. The high-pressure media stream effectively removes rust, paint and other undesirable coatings, leaving surfaces clean and ready for further treatment.
Air-scrubbing offers a number of advantages, making it a popular choice for surface preparation.
Versatility
Suitable for various surfaces such as metal, wood and concrete, it offers exceptional flexibility for a variety of cleaning, renovation and surface preparation projects.
Efficiency
Using a high-pressure media stream of up to 7 bar, it rapidly removes unwanted coatings, considerably reducing the time and effort required for stripping.
Profitability
Compared with other surface preparation techniques, this method is more economical, saving substantial costs because it doesn't require waste treatment.
Respect for the environment
Requiring no harmful chemicals, it is an environmentally-friendly alternative to chemical stripping, minimizing environmental impact and health risks.
Better grip
By removing old coatings and rust, it prepares a clean surface, ensuring better adhesion of new coatings and improving the durability of the finish.
